Every so often someone walks through our doors and reminds us why we do this. We had one of those nights recently.
We hosted a talk by Scott Reed, one of the youngest entrepreneurs we have worked with, and he held the room from the first sentence to the big reveal at the end.
Scott has been selling things since preschool, when he made products out of cardboard boxes. At five he sold off all the seedlings in his mum's greenhouse and made £40 in a day. Since then it has been paintings, home-baked cakes, and during the pandemic, bottles of repackaged fairy liquid sold as hand sanitiser. At nine he discovered a 3D printer at Code Club and was hooked. The printer he eventually settled on, a multicolour model, was in the room with us on the night.
He found us through his mum's shop, where he sold his first 3D printed fidgets and keychains. We worked through market research with him, helped him get to grips with AI prompting, and built a pricing calculator in Excel when the numbers became a sticking point. The breakthrough came from a single question in one of our sessions: did he know any Manx myths?
From there Scott invented the Triskelion, and wrote an original story sending it across the Island. It tiptoes past a tailless Manx cat and a ghost dog, bows to the fairies at the bridge, meets a mermaid and a glowing seal, and even claps along to the Bee Gees mid-song. Funny, warm, and unmistakably of this place.
Then came the unveiling: the 3D printed myth series itself, brought to life from the story. The full range is now live and available for pre-order.
This is exactly what Launchpad is for. A young person on the Island had a spark, a 3D printer, and real determination. We helped him sharpen the idea and figure out the boring but vital bits. Watching him present a finished product series is about as good as this job gets.
